Dread & Alive™
A diehard comic book fan and an avid reader of fiction/sci-fi novels (Robert A. Heinlein) growing up in the U.S., Nicholas Da Silva (ZOOLOOK) was disappointed in the lack of black heroic characters in American culture and literature. Coming from a diverse background, he promised to change that by meshing cultural facts with fiction.
Dread & Alive, brainstormed during ZOOLOOK’s early teen years, is the fruits of his labor. The award-winning Jamaican-inspired mixed-media series spans comic books, novels, and reggae music.
Released on February 6, 2010, the supernatural horror series featured the first Jamaican protagonist in comic books, Drew McIntosh, while offering a black comic book series rooted in Afro-Jamaican and West African spirituality, religion, folklore, and mythology.
A fusion of cultural facts and fiction, Dread & Alive is inspired by the Maroons of Jamaica, who resisted enslavement by the British, and their ancestors, the Akan and Asante (Ashanti) People of present-day Ghana.
Release Date: October 30, 2021
ZOOLOOK’s latest release from the Dread & Alive series is titled Nine Night. In this story arc, ZOOLOOK gives us a twisted take on the funerary wake where the veil between the living and the dead, man and spirit, is pulled aside. Chapter 1, Hide Your Soul, part 1, was released on April 20, 2021, along with an official soundtrack featuring nine scorching reggae songs.
Fans and newcomers to the series can purchase the new graphic novel release and three additional issues from the series (Duppy Conqueror, Issue #0, and Issue #1) through the official website.
