Dread & Alive™
Nine Night™
A diehard comic book fan and an avid reader of fiction/sci-fi novels (Robert A. Heinlein) growing up in the U.S., Nicholas Da Silva (ZOOLOOK) was disappointed in the lack of black heroic characters in American culture and literature. Coming from a diverse background, he promised to change that by meshing cultural facts with fiction.
Dread & Alive, brainstormed during ZOOLOOK’s early teen years, is the fruits of his labor. The award-winning Jamaican-inspired mixed-media series spans comic books, novels, and reggae music.
Released on February 6, 2010, the supernatural horror series featured the first Jamaican protagonist in comic books, Drew McIntosh, while offering a black comic book series rooted in Afro-Jamaican and West African spirituality, religion, folklore, and mythology.
A fusion of cultural facts and fiction, Dread & Alive is inspired by the Maroons of Jamaica, who resisted enslavement by the British, and their ancestors, the Akan and Asante (Ashanti) People of present-day Ghana.
