Directed by Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come follows Ivanhoe “Ivan” Martin (Jimmy Cliff), a young man from rural Jamaica who arrives in Kingston, Jamaica, looking for work and, after some initial struggles, lands a recording contract as a reggae singer. He records his first song, “The Harder They Come,” but after a bitter dispute with a manipulative producer, Hilton (Bob Charlton), he soon finds himself resorting to petty crime to pay the bills. Ivan deals marijuana, kills some abusive cops, and earns local folk hero status. Meanwhile, his record is topping the charts. Featuring an iconic reggae soundtrack led by Jimmy Cliff, the film remains one of the most influential works in Caribbean cinema and introduced Jamaican culture and reggae music to audiences worldwide.

As the director and co-writer of The Harder They Come, Henzell helped introduce authentic Jamaican storytelling, culture, and reggae music to audiences around the world. Born in Kingston on March 7, 1936, Henzell worked in television and advertising before turning his attention to filmmaking.
