Dread & Alive: Nine Night

The Soul

The Akan believe we come into this world possessing a soul (Kra or Okra) and a spirit (Sunsum) when we are born. The soul is our life force from God (Nyame), the spirit, our personality. It is the spirit that connects the body (Honam) to the soul.

A spiritual bond exists between father and child. The father’s spirit (Ntoro) passes on to the child providing strength and protection from spiritual attack or danger. The child inherits blood (Mogya) from its mother, which establishes the bond between them. It also determines the lineage.

Upon death (Owuo), the physical body is buried, returning to Mother Earth (Asase Yaa) while the soul journeys to the ancestral world (Asamando) to join the departed ancestors (Nsamanfo).

The spirit, however, remains with the body for several days (Nine-Night). It is here that the spirit is most vulnerable. If the body is not properly honored and buried, the spirit can transform into something malevolent, a duppy (Adopi) or ghost (Saman) that returns to haunt the living. Once this happens, the duppy will wander the earth.

What does this all mean?

In life, behind the physical, there is the spiritual; and behind the seen, the unseen.

And death… well, death is just the beginning.
