Myal Man

In ZOOLOOK’s Dread & Alive series, Philip McIntosh is the father of Drew McIntosh. A direct descendant of the Jamaican Maroons, Philip’s lineage traces back to the Ashanti people of the Gold Coast of Africa… present-day Ghana. A cultural anthropologist by day, Philip McIntosh is a local legend in the rural areas on the island of Jamaica. For when darkness falls, he is often called upon to perform the duties of a Myal practitioner or Myalman, to heal people and cast out bad spirits. The locals refer to him as ‘fo-yeyed’ (four-eyed).

Duppy Conqueror

Like his son, Drew, Philip McIntosh was gifted with second sight. When he came into the world, he was born with a caul over his face. A child born this way is believed by many people to have the special power to see into the spirit world. Such a child not only possesses the ability to see spirits but can also converse with them.

Philip’s gift (and curse) earned him the name, Duppy Conqueror. For Philip, benevolent and malevolent spirits, including the spirits of the dead, constantly inhabited his world.

Philip’s use of Myal focused on the connection between humans and the spirit world. But like the Obeah Man, he also operated in the same sphere of spiritual and herbal knowledge.

As a Myal Man (Medicine Man / Spiritual Healer), Philip often found himself pitted against the Obeah Man (Witchdoctor / Sorcerer), using Myalism (Akan-Ashanti origin) in opposition with Obeahism (the art of Black Magic).

He would often be called upon to cure those afflicted by the Obeah Man… ShadowCatcher!

Did You Know…

Philip McIntosh has two sons; Drew Mcintosh and Cuffee, the Akan day name for a male born on Friday.
Cuffee, who is three years older than Drew, was born in the mountain village of Accompong to a Maroon woman name Beneba. Philip had been married to Beneba for only a year when she became pregnant with a child.

Eight months later, she went into labor where she gave birth to Cuffee but died as a result of pregnancy complications. Cuffee remained in the Cockpit Country where he grew to adulthood and ultimately became the leader of the Maroons.
