The Ocean Cleanup
System 001 Launch
The Ocean Cleanup launched their first cleanup system on September 8, 2018, from San Francisco, out into the Pacific, to commence the cleanup of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the world’s largest plastic accumulation zones situated halfway between Hawaii and California. The Patch contains 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic and covers an area twice the size of Texas.
The cleanup system, System 001, is a 600-meter long float, with a 3-meter skirt. Propelled by wind and waves, the system skims the surface of the ocean, collecting plastic and debris in front of it.
The first collection of debris is scheduled to return to land within 6 months where the Ocean Cleanup will then recycle the material. To learn more about the Ocean Cleanup, visit their website today.
