Dread & Alive: Nine Night

The Akan Concept of Evil

In ZOOLOOK’s Dread & Alive series, to protect their people and their sacred, communal land from evil, Cudjoe and Quaco call on the Gods’ support and the Spirits of their ancestors. The brothers also rely on the abosoms, the lower deities or spirits.

Each brother acquired a sacred amulet (asuman) from the abosom that shields them from harm and protected them against death. To understand the Akan concept of evil, one must first understand the Akan belief in one’s destiny and free will.

The Akan believe that every human being has a destiny that has been foretold. In fact, their destiny is given by God. The Akan also believe that God is good. Therefore, the destiny that has been given to them by God must be good.

Evil is not the creation of God. The Akan believe that evil, whether moral or natural, is conjured up by the lesser spirits and man’s free will. Evil cannot act on its own. It must be employed by a spiritual agent or a human being (agents of evil).

Evil exists … not because of God. Because of mankind’s own will.
