On October 7, 2018, General elections were held in Brazil to elect the President, Vice President and the National Congress. Rio de Janeiro congressman and former army captain, Jair Bolsonaro, came first in the first round of the election. A member of The Social Liberal Party, a national-conservative political party in Brazil, he considers himself the ‘Trump of the Tropics’. The run-off between him and former São Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad (The Workers’ Party) will take place on October 28, 2018 and the world will be watching.

Their has been a surge of political violence since then. Many critics believe Mr. Bolsonaro’s inflammatory rhetoric is in part responsible for feeding this climate of violence against political opponents. He is often heard saying “violence should be fought with violence,” and during his speeches, he likes to mimic the firing of a pistol with his hands (finger guns).

Jair Bolsonaro has even called refugees arriving in Brazil, ‘the scum of the world’. He is on course to be Brazil’s next president after the jailing of his nemesis and main rival, the former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Millions of women (and men) in Brazil have now united under the hashtag and social media campaign #EleNão (#NotHim) against Bolsonaro. The hashtag, #EleNão, is not just about politics. It’s about morals!
