Pablo Paul

Jamaica

Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Everton ‘Pablo’ Paul has been singing and playing drums for over fifty years. Growing up, he was inspired by the sounds of the competing dancehalls up the road from where he lived and the Cuban music that came floating over the airwaves, and those influences have coloured his sound ever since.

He arrived in Toronto at 16 and played at clubs all over town, creating an internationally lauded sound.
In 2006, record collectors discovered Toronto’s unique sound and the players who created it, Paul among them, and put together Jamaica to Toronto, a compilation album. Celebrating the album’s release, he and his bandmates played an over-capacity show at Harbourfront and his music career has been back in full swing ever since.

He has played with greats like Jackie Mittoo, Percy Sledge, Ernest Ranglin, Alton Ellis, Toots and the Maytals, and Peter Tosh. He is the drummer for two bands, Jay Douglas and the All Stars as well as Rhythm Express, and released a solo album, Remembrance, in 2012.

He is an inaugural member of Toronto’s Reggae Hall of Fame and the owner of and Executive Producer for Side Door Records in Toronto.
