Sledge

Sitting In The Park

Some people call him ‘The Golden Voice’. Others call him a crooner. Courtney Whyte is his birth name but whenever he hits the stage, the studio or anything musical, he is known as Sledge.

Sledge, a son of Rae Town, a community located on the eastern side of Kingston, has been singing from an early age. When he attended church with his mother, he would actively sing at the church concerts or at the bible club meetings.

At school, whenever the teacher would leave the classroom, Sledge would get up on top of the desk, singing and performing to the delight of his classmates while one student would stand lookout for the teacher to return.

Sledge took his music seriously in his late adoloscent years. He hooked up with several bands and performed extensively across Jamaica. He got the opportunity to open up or share the stage with some of the best in the business such as Freddie McGregor, Beres Hammond, King Yellowman, Taurus Riley, the late Gregory Issacs, Capleton, Luciano and Duane Stephenson, just to name a few.

Sledge is making waves in the music industry. His debut album, ‘After The Storm,’ received critical acclaim all over the United States and Great Britain with heavy download action on iTunes. The album also earned him recognition in the city of Hartford, Connecticut, where he currently makes his home.

When asked, “why do you sing and who do you sing for?” His reply … “A wise man once told me, when you put a song on cd it’s no longer yours. It belongs to the people so give it wings and let it fly. Whatever I do, it’s for the people.”
