What do you get when you mix comic book storytelling with reggae music? You get Dread & Alive, the Jamaican-inspired mixed-media series spanning comic books, novels and music created and written by Nicholas Da Silva aka ZOOLOOK.
Featured on CNN, NPR (WEBZ 91.5 Chicago) and AFROPUNK, the Dread & Alive series is an epic tale of supernatural horror where the living meets the undead (Zombies, Duppies, and Vampires). Dread & Alive meshes cultural fact with fiction, featuring an original storyline inspired by the Maroons of Jamaica (who resisted against enslavement by the British) and their ancestors, the Akan and Asante (Ashanti) People of present-day Ghana, while offering an exclusive soundtrack series featuring roots and dub reggae music that spurs the imagination. In Dread & Alive, the protagonist, Drew McIntosh, is chosen to protect a sacred amulet while defending the world against an antagonistic force, the powerful Obeahman, Shadowcatcher.
ZOOLOOK has been busy working on the next story arc from the Dread & Alive series entitled Nine Night™. Nine-Night (aka the ‘dead yard’ or ‘set up’), the funerary tradition or wake in Jamaica, takes on a whole new meaning when Shadowcatcher descends upon The City, seeking retribution against his brother, Cudjoe, the Myalman, and possession of the soul of his apprentice, Drew McIntosh. Earlier this month, ZOOLOOK completed the pilot script for Nine Night as the first installment from the episodic tv series. He is now set to begin work on the chapter-based graphic novel series. Each chapter will feature an exclusive soundtrack series featuring original roots reggae and dub reggae music inspired by the story. Several tracks have been pre-released including an original track from artist Christos DC featuring Tippy I entitled ‘Still Living Dub’!
ZOOLOOK’s love for comics began at an early age due to the lack of positive multicultural heroes and fictional characters in American literature. He independently published two comic book series; HITLESS, a multicultural spy thriller first released in 2007, was the first digital comic book/music series produced for the fourth generation iPod and SONY PSP. The award-winning series got ZOOLOOK featured in Web Designer Magazine’s HOT 100 (#141) for 2008 three times; his own Web Designer Magazine takeover issue (#143) & being 1 of 100 artists selected out of 6 million worldwide to be called Adobe’s Chosen One.
“We expect great things from Da Silva in the future and in the meantime the first two episodes of Agent HITLESS are a good indication of what is to come.”
