After the United Kingdom and France, perhaps the most promising rising force of the Reggae & Dub scene in the European world of vibes is Spain. And one of their most talented new artists is without doubt, Jennifer Paulos.
The Hispano-Swiss-Portuguese artist began releasing her first works back in 2010 with the dub track, Hide Side, on “Corrupzion in Zion” (2010). Since then, she has continued to move forward with her music. Her collaborations with the local Spanish artist, Dub Presidents, who produced her first album “The trial of the Self” (2010), as well as with Mystic Selectah (2012) from Madrid, were the starting point in her musical path. It was only a matter of time that she would accomplish her international breakthrough through her collaborations with Izi Dub (FR) and Hi Fi Champion (CAN) in 2013.
Her first work on Dubophonic is called “Revolution” and consists of nine tracks of pure consciousness, among them a version of a classic Tappa Zukie tune. Sang in Spanish and English, she uses her warm voice as a trademark of her Mediterranean oriented sound spreading to all listeners the funky vibes of her soul. Alongside with her you can find some exclusive dubs by the Dub Presidents (ES), Svaha Sound System (UK), Mat DT Sound (FR) / Woody Vibes (FR) / Cloud of Vib’s (FR) & Mystic Selectah (SP), as well as a special bonus track by Dave Doma (ES). The Interview
IRIE. Can you tell us a little bit about your background, where you are from?
Jennifer Paulos: I was born in Switzerland. My mother is Spanish and my father is Portuguese. I moved to Spain when I was twelve and have lived here ever since.
IRIE. What genres of music were you exposed to as a child?
Jennifer Paulos: Since childhood, I’ve always liked many different styles of music. I mainly listened to rap and rock music. I also listened to a lot of Spanish and Mexican music when I was little and living in Switzerland.
Sometimes I would sing at a Mexican restaurant where they hosted live shows. That was my first public appearance singing. As I grew up, I discovered other genres of music like Reggae, Soul, Funk.
I guess you could say that I’m influenced by a mixture of genres.
IRIE. Why did you choose Dub Reggae?
Jennifer Paulos: Well, I’ve always loved reggae, especially the genres of roots reggae and ska. Dub was the style that definitely caught my attention with the techniques of King Tubby (fx, echos, sirens). Dub is the genre where I feel most comfortable.
IRIE. You released your first album, ‘The trial of the Self’ in 2010, which was produced by the local Spanish artists Dub Presidents. What was the experience like to put out your first album?
Jennifer Paulos: The feeling was something very personal and exciting. It made me feel very close to what I wanted and I liked to do.
IRIE. We first heard about your music through Dubophonic Netlabel with your dub track, I Say No More, from your Revolution album. Irie track! Can you share with us the meaning behind the track?
Jennifer Paulos: The instrumental produced by DtSound inspired me to make a bold statement; to not to beat around the bush. Basically, I wanted to say that you have to wake up and open your eyes to try to see a little beyond what lies ahead. That you have to fight for your rights that nobody will fight for you.
IRIE. How did you hookup with Dubophonic Netlabel?
Jennifer Paulos: Thomas contacted me first. He liked what I was doing and offered me the chance to be on his label and make an album with several of my songs. We continue forward and took the project to light. For me, it is a pleasure working with Dubophonic. I liked the illusion, perseverance and humility with which it works.
IRIE. Who are some of the artists that you listen to? Are they any particular artists that inspire your work?
Jennifer Paulos: I am inspired by countless artists including Curtis Mayfield, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh and Led Zeppelin, to name a few.
I listen to lots of different artists as well including Scientist, Alpha & Omega, Rod Taylor, Pupajim, Frac, Dub Engine, Brainless SoundSystem and Marina P.
IRIE. When you’re not performing or making Dub Reggae music, what does Jennifer Paulos like to do?
Jennifer Paulos: I like to listen to music from other genres, watch movies, documentaries and some tv series. I also like hiking and mountain climbing but between my music and work, I do not have as much time as I want.
IRIE. Are you currently working on any new projects? What can we expect from you in 2015?
Jennifer Paulos: I am working on several projects with various producers, mainly from France. I am also working on a new video for my song with Dub Suppliaz. Gradually we will publish everything. 2015 will be a good year!
IRIE. Is there anything else you would like to share with the IRIE audience?
Jennifer Paulos: I would like to send a big greeting from Spain to the entire Irie Magazine audience. I ask them to support as much as possible the artists of their cities because they are the foundation of the Dub movement.
